Supporting complexity in distributed virtual reality systems

Future applications of virtual reality will require increasingly complicated virtual worlds to yield the richness and functionality demanded by increasing numbers of users. This document introduces some qualitative measures of complexity which may be used to asses virtual reality systems. A number of current virtual reality systems are considered with regard to the facilities and complexity which they support. Some key methods are identified which are used by these systems to provide support for larger and more complicated worlds. Finally, these observations and assessments are brought together in a list of recommendations for creating virtual reality systems which support very large and complicated virtual worlds.
